Recommended Comp Software

Ive asked a few other people, with mixed results. If I wanted to get into map editing, what software would I require? What would I use to open or edit a WAD? Ive had many ideas for maps, storylines and whatnot, and an abundance of free time. All help appreciated.

Doom Builder for maps...
