Several months ago, I typed out and formatted an HTML version of the original Chex Quest website printouts that were recovered around a year ago. (A fan found the printouts in his attic or something like that, and scanned them.)
After typing and formatting it all, I then proceeded to make an "Enhanced Version" to correct the countless typos, grammatical errors, discrepancies, and Doom leftovers (e.g. calling flemoids monsters).
When I finished that, I proceeded to make an "Enhanced and Updated Version", which contained the enhancements and was also updated to include modern information, such as Chex Quest 3, The Ultimate Chex Quest, the fan community, and modern computers.
I haven't had the time to upload my Unmodified and Enhanced versions, but the so-far of the Enhanced and Updated Version is now accessible at http://dsr.nfshost.com/chexweb/original/index2.htm (http://dsr.nfshost.com/chexweb/original/index2.htm). Check it out if you're interested, and tell me what you think. I will upload the Restored Version and the Enhanced Version as soon as I can.
What I really need some help with, though, is the graphical aspect. Almost all of the graphics are the original black-and-white images which I copied from the scanned printouts. If anybody has some of the original full-color artwork not already on my version, that would be much appreciated.
The buttons didn't take me anywhere, and also, I must note that it appears here (http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/default.htm) that you botched a few web links (including the one to the reconstruction project), placing some "\s" when URLs should have "/s." This has created numerous broken links on your website.
Who in the word are a bunch of the charactors? BTW this is really good. :) also, this was never in color.
The buttons are pointless. I don't go anywhere unless I try to Show Image on the nonexistent picture, which says that it's still being worked on. If I eventually find the link to CQ Reality, being very hard to get to, I will realize that it's the only button that actually works. Needs a LOT of fixes, so I'm not saying any more until I get an actual website. But I like the idea, sounds great.
This is an awesome idea. You just need to work on your code a bit moar.
The color thing, tho...cant you get programs to turn B/W photos into color? Mebe we could find one...
Tried the link...it was broken. :(

You'd need to define every single color in the photo and tell where it went, which would take a LONG time. I doubt there's a program that automatically converts BW to color. How would it know what colors go where? So you'd be better off tinting it manually, just like in the old days.
I vote we should digitally remaster all of the images. ^_^ There's nothing that a few hours in Photoshop can't do, eh?
Not to mention, it would give us plenty of characters and flemoids for a rotating banner at the top of the forum. (We were planning on doing that at some point, right?)
I think that was under Richie's To-Do List. Digital Remastering would be great!
I'm for it! Who wants to buy a 'shop for me? XD jk
I got a cheaper, but still powerful paint shop. All I will ask is this:
Can someone clip out the pictures we need? instead of me redownloading the whole dang thing all over again?
(or at least re-upping the thing to mediafire or other friendly host?)
What editor are you using?

Right click on the pictures, and hit :Save as: or copy. ;)
...where?
"Save Link Target As" or "Save Image As" in the right-click menu.
>< NO, where am I "Save Image As" from? That website above doesn't work for me, I just get a page with broken buttons...
the buttons fail >.>
Pretty much everyone has figured that out by now.... *ye olde sigh*
Where is the site maker...THERE he is!
Hey bro, can we get a fix on da site? she dont wurk.

Which one? The buttons do nothing in the link that Dacicus provided, so I'm curious as to where this link is of which you speak.

Rep, maybe if you actually went to the site and clicked on the bottom link you would realize that it doesn't work. :P
I tried a few combinations of URLs from the page source...here it is, BTW:
[code]
<html>
<body bgcolor=white background="restored\bground.gif">
<p align=center><img src="restored\cqlogo.gif" title="Chex
The only link THAT actually worked through a means of experimentation brought me this. That's the only thing on the site.

...How in the world did you get that? Are we looking at the same thing? Here, this works. http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/original/updated/frames.htm
Hmm...Interesting.
However, I'd rather see the original in a working format instead of a more current events one...though that is really great.
The Flemoid looks silly, have green, half gray. I'd also prefer a "Puritan" version with no enhancements.
By the way, wouldn't it be fair to say that the original website is where the advanced, green, hi-res graphics of the Flemoids come from?
That would be great to use the original images up there...but how did we get them in the first place?
The links I went through provided SOME interesting stuff, but the site seemed to be lacking in areas. 4 of 10 stars
Ooh, Commander Keen stuff! (I clicked on the "back to main hub" button. :p)
EDIT: Nevermind, that links broken too.

On the contrary, how did you get THAT? Every link I tried was an impossibility, unless maybe you were using IE or something?
And yeah, I think I'd rather have an Original version than this so-called "Enhanced" version. I don't give a zorch if the system requirements for TUCQ are on there. I want the original site back.
And a flaw: in the FAQ section, it states that the GZDoom version of TUCQ can boost health to 200%. First of all, there's no such thing as a GZDoom port for TUCQ anyways. Second, I just want the original CQs.
Blah. Needs a LOT more work. Though the concept is nice, once again. 2 out of 10 stars
I compared it to the original images, and it also appears to be "enhanced" with new text and materials, like Damien said.
And yeah, the images themselves would make great hi-res pics, but the gray-green blend looks ridiculous.

IMO they are better than gray pictures or colored pictures cut smaller, they aren't terrible just not finished.
I guess he got the colors from CQFF old site, but Really, he could get them full from TUCQ...

They're in the title strip from the old forum, and they're in TUCQ's between game backgrounds. (You know when you beat the map, and go onto the next.)
Sorry for taking so long to get back here. I only get on the internet once a week.
Okay, first off, like I said in the first post, only the Enhanced and Updated Version has been uploaded. I didn't have time to upload the others. That means the bottom link. I have no idea why some of you can't seem to access it. Yes, I use Internet Explorer, and if some of you use a different web browser (e.g. Firefox) it could be that I used some HTML "shortcuts" that only work for I.E. Maybe I should start processing my webpages through MS Word.
And whoever it was that placed this link (http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/default2.htm), where in the world did you find that?!? That's my old site CQ Reality, but I didn't put a link on my post.
Yes, Replica, this is what you were intended to get after clicking the link and clicking "Enhanced and Updated Version": http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/original/updated/frames.htm.
Quote"Ooh, Commander Keen stuff! (I clicked on the "back to main hub" button. :p)

What do you mean that link's broken? It works fine for me. In fact, last week I posted a link to it on the Public Commander Keen Fan Forum and nobody complained about broken links. Try this: dsr.rewound.net/keen/ (http://dsr.rewound.net/keen/), or this for my home page dsr.rewound.net (http://dsr.rewound.net).

We don't have the "Original" Version. All we have is the scanned printouts. The main enhancements here are not intended to be graphically, but textually. Note my extended History of Chex Quest. My removal of countless grammatical errors. My modification of the Bios so they no longer contradict known parts of the Chex Quest storyline. My complete rewriting of the flemoid Bios so they actually match the gameplay and don't sound pathetic. (In fact, I pretty much rewrote the entire Bios section except for four or so of the Cereal guys.)
And in the FAQ, I seriously modified most of the strategy tips and stuff to line up more to the Chex gameplay than to Doom. The original FAQ was pretty much a sloppy modification of the Doom FAQ.
And I added a miscellany of interesting stuff in the "Miscellaneous Questions and Answers," as well as various things throughout the site.
And regarding the 200% thing, I'm talking about the w.i.p. patches you can find on the forum. Once you apply all the patches Fruits and Vegetables will boost you over 100% all the way to 200%, just like glasses of water and Supercharge Breakfasts. The patches also add hi-res floors, etc. It says it has some 3D models too but those never worked for me.
So does nobody know anywhere I could get any of the original pics? So far I just have a handful of the flemoids (currently included) and the Chex Quest logo (which I'm only GUESSING came from the original site).
Hey damien, thanks for answering a few questions.
The buttons only work in internet explorer, but most go nowhere...and about the "original" site, we're talking about recreating the site from what we have with NO modifications or updates. The enhanced version can have this, but we'd like a living, working chexquest.com remake. But all your stuff is a step in a new direction, lets just try it.
What he said.
I would like to see the Original, non-edited version first, then maybe an Enhanced version.
Okay, so that's what it was, they work in IE. Please, PLEASE fix that. A lot of us on the CQFF use Firefox. I don't want to open up IE just to get one site.
Oh, and as for the CQ Reality thing? I tried to click View Image in Firefox on the broken image on the home page you provided, and then it said Web Page Not Found. So then, I clicked "Back to Main Page." It brought me to a bunch of links, none of which worked for me except for one. That's how I got there.

Ah, it works now. Thanks!
But for the love of Manny, make the thing work in non-Internet Fail browsers! Anyone who has any internet sense uses Firefox (or something comparable on other operating systems besides Windows, as I don't know if there are any release for other OSs), and we Firefox people tend to get cranky when one little thing pops up that Firefox doesn't like.

Exactly! I'm not going to one site that's friggin' IE-based just to switch browsers for five minutes.
And btw, I know Linux users can use Firefox, and Apple users have Safari.
I just came across a copy of Frontpage 2003. If I can get it up and working, i'll find the scans and try my hand at a remake.
Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) is a great top end image editor that's free under the GPL license. No steal involved. It's generally considered the free photoshop.

Of course it is. It's got a lot of PS for the home user, only lacking in some more complex and professional tasks, which it can probably perform better than GIMP. But overall, yeah, it would prolly be good for a website. ;)
QuoteI would like to see the Original, non-edited version first, then maybe an Enhanced version.
Wow, I didn't expect that. Well, like the site indicates, I
did already go to the trouble of making a non-modified version first. This time I'll just upload 'em as zips 'cause it'll take a lot less time for me. I haven't made them Firefox-compatible yet, but I'll do that sometime.
http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/original.zip (http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/original.zip) - original version HTML-ized with no textual enhancements
http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/updated.zip (http://dsr.rewound.net/chexweb/updated.zip) - enhanced and updated version
I won't upload the scans or enhanced (not updated) version unless someone wants them.
I like the original. And THANK YOU for doing this in zip format (it now works with firefox as its just simple stuff)
HOWEVER, the tables in the FAQ have been destroyed. If its fixable, do it, if not...i'd be fine with a table.
And now, in its entirety, it looks nice! Just gonna take ALOT of work restoring the pictures found only in the scans...
The tables were always "destroyed" in the scanned pictures.
Anyway, perhaps this will make up for ivhimss' website disappearing.

WAT
I swear I went to it just a few months ago! Saw his CQ Deep Sea adventure thing...or whatever it was.
My records show it went down sometime prior to 9/21/2008. Anyway, the link was formerly ivhimss Chex Quest Fan Site (http://www.cadetswdm.org/ivhimss/chex/archives/oldfaq.htm).
You're talking about his version of the orginal CQ site right?
Yes.
I must of never been there untill it was down then... I had doubts because of the deep sea talk.
From what I remember, I went there and saw that he had a Legacy CQ project that took place underwater. I also went there and looked at the recreation, but basically he had just broken up the Scans and pieced it back together in HTML. Or maybe there was something more to it...I cant remember, but I do remember those 2 things being there.
I had archived the old website files so I put what I had back out there on a new domain I have lying around as the other one has been gone for some time. It doesn't format quite as well on Firefox but I guess I wrote it before my preference for Firefox. Oh well.
