Title: Button Configuration
Post by: Ether Bot on November 09, 2014, 08:40:44 AM
Am I the only one who uses
WASD to move.
Space to jump
Q to run
E to use
R to crouch, and
F to pause?

I think so. I've always done fine using the pre-set controls the game comes with.

I use:
CTRL to fire
SPACE to use
ALT to jump
ARROW KEYS to move
"Pause" or "Insert" key to pause
K to drop my weapon
And if I'm on GZDooM, I use the mouse to look around.

Oh, and I don't use SHIFT for run, because I have always run on.

WASD to move, space to jump, click/right-click to fire/altfire, scroll wheel to switch weapons, (scroll up for next and down for previous); e for use (open doors/hit switches, shift for run(well, walk since I have always run on), ctrl for crouch, R and F for inventory item switching, and Q to use the inventory item.
...phew
EDIT: Oh, and mouselook

Definitely WASD to move. In every game.
Mouse1 to Fire. Mouse2 to AltFire.
SPACE to Jump
E to Use
SHIFT to Crouch
+ Always Run (I never walk, even by using the button)

Arrow keys to move, in every game, without exception; I'm left handed so WASD doesn't make sense. I tried IJKL but the I isn't directly above the K so it always messed me up.

Space is use (again, every game; I can't break that Doom habit on that one)

The bad thing about this is I have to choose between alt fire OR jump for my right mouse button. My right hand's position over the arrow keys makes it very hard to hit anything useful precisely other than the arrow keys themselves.

I typically use A to jump if the game has something more useful to bind to the right mouse button; being on the other side of the keyboard it's not particularly useful but it's OK for single player stuff.

In some ways console games are easier for me because I can comfortably hold the controller and hit all the buttons, but there really is no beating the precision of a mouse.

If your left handed, i'd recommend trying an IJKL configuration.

I just can't get used to it, I'd always screw up and think u or sometimes even o was forward instead of I, and sometimes even shift my whole hand over one key and suddenly nothing works

As sad as it sounds, I just use the default keyboard configuration.

Yay old school!

I also use the default configuration
Except I use ALT for jump.

Oh, and @75, I also use most of those controls for things, I'm left handed too.

Same here. It just works for those old run-and-gun games.
