Title: CQ3 running in DOS or old Zdoom version
Post by: linuxlove on November 08, 2009, 06:40:36 PM
I'm wanting to play Chex Quest 3 on my old Pentium 75 laptop, but the CQ1 engine doesn't work, nor does DOOM v1.666 or DOOM II v1.9 and the Zdoom engine packaged with the CQ3 download. So is there a DOOM/CQ engine that wil run the CQ3 WAD?

Wait, what kind of laptop?

If its a laptop with a 75Mhz Pentium, you can forget ZDooM. But Chex Quest should DEFINITELY work. You need the original engine, but it works.

Also, old ZDooM isn't compatible with new wads, mostly due to DECORATE tweaks and rendering stuff. Plus, its most likely going to need at least a Pentium II, maybe even P3

well i tried "chex.exe -file chex3.wad" and i got this error:

R_GenerateLookup: column without a patch (CJSW1_1)
R_GenerateLookup: column without a patch (REDWALL)

Causes the game to lock at startup.

There is no way to run chex3.wad on chex.exe (the original CQ engine) w/o modifying it. It uses too many ZDooM tricks.

You don't.  I don't see why the Zdoom packed with CQ3 shouldn't work for you.

It told me that it was expecting a newer version of Windows. I guess Windows 98 isn't new enough.

Sadly, it's not. Neither is that Pentium.

With everything turned to the lowest settings, maybe. But that's a 5% chance.
