Title: New CQ MIDI Music
Post by: Strife on June 24, 2008, 01:57:38 PM
Here's a list of the songs found in this thread, so you don't have to hunt for them. ^_^

With the announcement of Chex Quest 3, i've been inspired to compose MIDI music again. ^_^ As always, i'm aiming for the Chex Quest style with my own personal twist. More specifically, i'm going to see if I can make a full set of songs so that Chucker has a broader choice of music for CQ3 besides the original tunes from the previous games. (But of course, it's his decision.)

With that said, here's something I composed last night and early this morning. Let me know if i'm still good. xD

Cool man. I love your stuff. You know I write MIDIs now too, I've been inspired by you and I use noteworthy just like you. I have trouble with odd rhythms sometimes though.

And that's really cool, Lucius. =D I'm glad I made a positive difference.

When you say "rhythm", do you mean problems with drum beats, or with the general structure and "flow" of the song?

Wow. I just downloaded Anvil Studio, and I think I'll try my hand at composing a song. Who knows, I might ACTUALLY be good at it! :D

On this music making note:  My sister recently got a music maker for Mabinogi.  (As ChexCommander is cursing Nexon for ever making that game, and therefore having me mention it so darn much.)

Nexon is really bad with customer service. I can't count how many times i've had problems with MapleStory. x__x

Anyway, 'nuther song here. ^_^ I figured i'd try something faster this time.

Are you kidding me?! There's a music maker for a stupid MMORPG created by Nexon?  Wow, what's this world coming to?
Sheesh, I actually play music, so I can create music with anything I want, from my keyboard with 256 sounds, 100 rhythms, and a recorder for them, to Finale Notepad 2003 (which creates the sheet music along with it  ;)).
But hey, I might download Anvil Studio just to try it out.

The new music seems more upbeat and faster; a deviation from the Chex Quest norm. Not exactly Chex Quest-like music, but it's certainly something different, which is nice, for a change.

Thanks, guys. =D

And that's true, Manny. As I said before, i'm putting my own twist on the original style, since it would be nearly impossible for me to duplicate another person's style. I could easily imagine Haphazard being some kind of tune for a boss battle, or some other level where hundred of flemmies are coming at you from every direction. ^^

When you say "rhythm", do you mean problems with drum beats, or with the general structure and "flow" of the song?

Mostly drum beats and such. Sometimes it's hard thinking of sections and structure too. Like choruses and flows and things. I made an 8 minute song recently for a school project. It's got cello, keyboards, vocals, and some other stuff. I can send it to you if you want to hear it.

is it worded vocals like "dear Molly McTaggart was gan doon't to town, a-skippin' and whistlin' her way..." or the robotic single sound stuff like "oooooh-ooh-OOOOOHH-ooh-oooh-OOOH-ooh-OOH"

I had trouble with that as well... but I guess the best advice I can give you is to keep at it. I never took any music classes in my life, so all of my experience comes from trial and error.

In that case, it's entirely up to you if you want me to hear it. If so, I shall accommodate you as best I can. ^_^

Anyways, new song here:

Alright man, I can send you the song by email, if you want it. One thing I recommend is you listen to it on pretty good speakers, or good headphones. It's a pretty wide frequency range and the bass can blow out small headphones or small speakers. The CQ style music sounds pretty good man. :)
Title: Re: New CQ MIDI Music

The music reminds me of Digital Banjos a lot.

One thing that I'd like to observe is that you tend to double the length of your MIDIs, that is, make it where the song repeats at the halfway point. Is there a reason behind this?

If I'm not mistaken, Andrew Bensons original music did that as well. But the later repetitions were altered slightly from the first one. I think that's what Strife's doing. Right, Strife?

Post by: ChexCommander on June 27, 2008, 03:44:08 PM
Have any of you guys, besides Strife (who I know hasn't), taken music classes?  I'm a musician who plays four instruments: Piano, Trombone, Guitar, and Bass Guitar.  And if you did, you would realize that repeats are often very common in music, so it is not weird for Strife to be putting repeats into his soundtracks.

Indeed. =) However, my reason for doing it is so that you guys can see how the song loops without having to replay it in whatever media player you're using. (And some programs have a brief pause before looping music.) If, for any reason, filesize is an issue, I can always chop off the second loop before convering it to Doom format.

E-mail is fine, Lucius. ^_^
Title: Re: New CQ MIDI Music
Post by: Manny Cav on June 27, 2008, 07:45:39 PM
The loop idea is certainly handy. I use that halfway point for that purpose, myself. ;) File size can hardly be an issue with MIDIs, anyway. :D

Well, I was just on Anvil and I decided to start out with some basic stuff, like doing a remix of the Caverns of Bazoik level music. 'Twould be here: (Since MediaFire is undergoing "Maintanence" I had to host on FileFront, but it's no biggy since the file is only 19.1 KB)

If you want to be harsh, please, please be harsh. I needz to learn. :)

It sounds kind of plain, to be blunt, like the only thing that was done was instrument swapping, not an actual "remix". Still, I have to assume that you're a beginner at this sort of thing, correct?

 :o :o :o :o NO, NOT MABINOGI AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, anyways, I've gone to work with Anvil Studio as well.  I've started off doing a remix of "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry but I'll go on to CQ-style stuff as well.
Title: Re: New CQ MIDI Music
Post by: Atariangamer on June 30, 2008, 02:53:56 PM
I don't really make remixes. I just reinstrumentize, optimize, and add little quirks to it. A true remix is like Tilple, and some recreations are things like Strife. Wayc made some midis like me, Just switching around the instruments.

Hmm. I like slimenators e1m5, but some tips...
1. Simulate Echo. Copy the notes into a new channel, shift it over some, then lower the volume. Especially on that plucked instrument in the beginning.
2. Multi instruments. Have more than one instrument play a track. Mebe with the bass track, put in a fretless and a mute guitar.
3. stress points. Copy bits of the more Pointy parts of the song, then use some low strings or something to reinforce it.

Thats what I'd do...in fact, I just might!...nvrmind lol

I might retry some MIDI2MP3. Those few I did working with Boingo really helped me learn about the sound and volumes, also how to work in pitches, and work to make it sound good. I'll start with one of strife's.

@Slime: How do you remix?  Do you listen to the music by ear, and put it down, or do you find the MIDI for the music and just use different instruments?

I think you need more help with the melody.  Add in a few more lead instruments, and a few background to go with them.  Try changing up the drum beat in the middle.

I know all this music theory stuff, but I don't always use it.  ;D

However, I've been making a song too, that's also in its beginning stages.  I'll post it when I get the chance.

That drum beat almost sounds off from the lead...And that crash cymbal started ringin in my ears after awhile.

I'd say this must be REALLY early. Develop the song more. Add in a few more leads, and maybe some strings and bass in the background.

Keep goin, tho...y'never know.

I spent between 15 to 20 minutes working on this rough draft, so it's about as finished as CQ 64.

I've been working on a song for the ending sequence of Chex Quest 3 (which will replace D_BUNNY in the wad file). It's taken me a while to think of a decent melody, but let me know if it sounds okay. ^_^

If you're referring to the fact that Chexter appeared twice in the ending scene, the second version of him isn't an impostor. The left side of the screen actually shows what happened after he emerged from the slime, so the picture as a whole is kindof a "before and after" sort of thing... I think. ^^;

Thank you! =D

This topic is sadly a victim of necromancy. Perhaps you could put the music in a new topic? I'm afraid I have to lock this, either way.

EDIT: Since the Chex Quest section has been exempted from the bumping rule, I'm unlocking this topic.
