Title: help me
Post by: datdere on December 21, 2013, 09:13:05 PM
Hi I have recently played chex quest againb ecause when I was a kid I had the cd from the cereal box and loved it.
So I downloaded it from here: http://www.myabandonware.com/game/chex-quest-2e4
So great nostalgia, etc etc. One thing the music seems kind of different, I remember it as being a little darker but maybe I just don't remember. Also it does not include the intro or ending scenes for some reason.

But then, look! I looked at this speed run and it is different!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcjYGi57M-Y

Some weapon placings are different, and the final boss moves WTF!
Someone please tell me what is going on? Do I have the right version. Thank.s

ONE more thing!  I remember in the laboratory there used to be weird diagrams of the flemoid larvae with two eggs in them. But I cannot find these.

I don't know of a way to get the intro/ending cutscenes in modern versions of windows; the problem is they're too old for 64 bit windows and too new for DOS, you'd probably need windows XP or something even older to get them to work (note: a VM of windows 98 is pretty easy to get working) ; if you're interested in that you can get an iso of the original chex cd here

http://gallery.xboltz.net/downloads/#Chex_Quest_Full_CD

it's busted up into a bunch of different parts but I can probably make it into a real iso for you if you have a hard time with the process.

The version in that video is a botched port; he's playing it using a Doom port without the DeHacked patch that changes the behavior of the monsters to what they were intended to be.

Also, I'm not sure where that diagram was originally but I know what you're talking about; I put it in the starting area of Chex Pack E5M1.

Hope that helps, and welcome to the CQFF.

Actually, it is quite possible to get the intro videos to work on a modern Windows.

Download and install the RAD Video Tools (http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm) to get the necessary codecs.

And then to make them play when you start CQ, I crafted a specially made .BAT file:

@echo off
"C:\Program Files (x86)\RADVideo\SmackPlw.exe" intro.smk /I4 /W640 /H480
chocolate-doom.exe -iwad chex.wad
start "end" "C:\Program Files (x86)\RADVideo\SmackPlw.exe" end.smk /I4 /W640 /H480

For my port, I'm using Chocolate Doom (http://www.chocolate-doom.org), but you can use any port you like. ChocoDoom just gives the most authentic 1996 experience.

Paste the code up there into Notepad, and save it in the Chocolate Doom folder as "Chex.bat". (No quotes) And you'll need the video files, of course. Download "chex.wad (http://gallery.xboltz.net/downloads/Chexquest.zip)", "intro.smk (http://gallery.xboltz.net/downloads/Chex%20Quest%20Intro%20(smk).zip)", and "end.smk (http://gallery.xboltz.net/downloads/Chex%20Quest%20Ending%20(smk).zip)", and unzip them into the Chocolate Doom folder. Run Chex.bat, and enjoy the nostalgia!

Huh, I didn't realize they were smk files, neat. Though chocolate doom won't run chex quest unless you have Fraggle's Chex Quest Dehacked patch http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=15420 in the directory chex.wad is in.

Yes, properly set up, that will let you run CQ just like 1996. It defaults to the arrow keys for movement, but Chocolate Doom comes with a utility that lets you change keyboard bindings.
