Title: Chex Quest Machinima
Post by: rexxor on January 22, 2012, 03:12:07 PM
I think we should try and do some more Chex Quest Machinima.
This one here seems to be the only Machinima for Chex Quest

What do you guys think? Any ideas for a Machinima?

It's a lot of fun to do when you can get people together in Skulltag or the like, so if possible I'd love to do some more.

EDIT: Xbolt, what about that one you did for the Christmas Contest a couple years ago?

I was thinking we could do one kind of like alternate universe where the original Chex Guy, failed and they send an elite squad of four to take down the flemoids!

Some sort of G-Man squad, but with Chex Questers? XD

Now that I think about it more, I think we should go through a "Let's Play: ChexQuest Episodes 1-3 COOP!!"
We could go Through it with Mumble and commentate on the game as we run through it.

CQ3 is awful for Coop.

And unless we've got some serious internet pipes or some insane compression, sending the screen caps would be murder.

If I was there, I could record video. recording mumble is pretty easy (and I've even got a mumble server running).

I agree; I've played through all of E1 online before. It is too easy by itself, and if you try to replace the monsters with stronger ones, it does not help the situation.

The map design is bad for multiplayer, there's no other way to say it. There are a lot of thin, critical cooridors that are miserable to fight in (especially E1M3), one way coordiors (very common in E2 and E3), and a serious lack of ammo and weapons in some maps, and put a lot of flemoids in the map (E1M3, E1M4), while other maps give you too much of everything and have empty rooms (E1M2 has every weapon except the LZ and 2 breakfasts if I recall correctly).

I like how the game looks, though. That's why I'm trying to make maps for it, I love the textures, but the mapping... has a lot of areas that could be improved. I hope to have some sort of co-op episode in my mod, eventually.

I recommend Bandicam if you need recording software, it is very efficient, and is completely nag-ware free except for a watermark in your video, which is just plain text and says "www.bandicam.com", much better than that "UNREGISTERED SCREEN RECORDER GOLD YOU DIDN'T PAY FOR THIS" caption I see on some videos

Some of those issues I know can be fixed with some tweaking of DM flags in Doom Seeker.

Such as Monsters Respawn, Are Faster, Ammo Respawns, Weapons stay when picked up. Just to name a few that I like to use whenever my brother and I do Coop through it.
Anyway it doesn't have to be a Let's Play type thing. It could be something entirely different. Just need some Ideas...

If I remember correctly you were there when we decided to do that Sparta parody video. Matthias and I were acting and you filmed it. That turned out pretty decent right?

You're right, item respawn does help. However, what I meant by not enough weapons is that there are too many weapons missing within some maps, i.e., they're not even placed in there.

Playing it with the ST Pack as a PWAD makes it slightly more fun, but also makes the design problems more significant in the maps. If you like a challenge, I recommend it, it can be frustrating sometimes though. Also, in E2 you will be zorching superpowered quadrumpi.

EDIT - at one time, I hosted a server that had the ST Pack + Chex3.wad, but I removed it because it was only really enjoyable for nostalgia or a bizarre challenge. I can host it again if you need me to.

I Accept this Challenge!!!

Anyway, Does anybody have any ideas for a goofy\cool Machinima?

I would like to see a chex quest red vs. blue, definitely, but it will take some creativity and imagination.

most of what I like about red vs blue is the fancy motions and sound effects, since Chex Quest is completely sprite based, you will need to be very creative to make it entertaining. It's not impossible though, I've seen good machinimas that were played on NES Mega Man.

Hmm...

I think due to various conflicting time zones, we should just talk about it here, and record once we have a basic idea and some scripts down. After all, that's what forums are for, right?

Anyways, I had a question: Are we going to do this with Vanilla Chex Quest or use additional mods and maps? Personally, I prefer the later. We could make a couple of good team based multiplayer maps, and do a Red vs. Blue type thing with them.

I'm not sure of what to record yet, I was thinking a compilation of funny moments, that we do from a script in the Original Levels.

I'm open to anything though so Let the ideas flow!

Alright, I'll see if I can make a sample map. Also, I'm gonna make a class with old school style video recorder sprites, that can fly XD

Also, we can do both the Original Levels and New ones.

I've got a couple ideas so far.
We can use the skulltag pack for skins in the original levels.
First Skit
Chexman is fighting a couple of flemoids on E1M1 in the hallway leading up to the red door.
It is a pretty even match, suddenly, Chex runs out of zorch! Ducking behind a post he reassesses the situation. Perhaps he should've been a doctor? Or a Scientist? Maybe he wasn't cut out for the corp. Maybe he should've gone to law school?
While he's pondering all of this he gets slimed by a quadrumpus that sneaks up behind him.
2nd
Some Hijinkery with crate chex skin.
3rd
Some Flemoids at a water cooler talking about how they are gonna slime the chex man. That can be taken and evolved into several different situations.

As for Levels I think it can be a combo of both. I like the Class Sprite idea!

I think it could be a couple skits for each video. and each one we do should feature the levels from that corresponding Episode. So the first video we do has skits and such done in E1M1-5 As well as the maps from the Skull Tag pack made for Chex Quest.

Hmmm...

Interesting. I've got a couple ideas for maps now. So, thats pretty much not the RvB idea, but can we do that also? And, who is gonna record? Do they have OpenGL capabilites?
Title: Re: Chex Quest Machinima

Good Question, I think we'll need at least 4 players and 1 to record, I can record if needed though. I would just need a list of commands so I can fly and get better angles\no clipping etc.

The RvB idea can still be done, maybe further along down the road.

Send me a PM about when you're planning to do this, I could feasibly host a server and/or get more players. Try to do it on the weekend, but I can't make any guarantees about my availability. I can record, but I can't upload, so I won't be much more than a server host and possibly a participant.

EDIT - also, I recommend playing this with SV_Cheats - the cameraman should use "take all", and "fly", then get rid of all crosshairs/HUD stuff, so it will look good. Note that there is a slight bob up and down when flying, I'm not sure what you can do about that; perhaps he should just spectate and then crop out the "press space to join" message.

I'm pretty sure you can turn the bobbing off, either via acs or the options.

I think this weekend is really clear, on account of my family being out of town again.
@bobbing, I think that is what Atarian did when we filmed the sparta parody.
If you could host a server for us that would be spectacular. :D
