That guy apparently also did a mock Chex cereal ad using what appears to be TUCQ.

I am also testing out the new {youtube}{/youtube} tags.

Double posting is alright if you're the thread creator. However, members are encouraged to use the edit button for their last post in the thread if that post is the most recent post in the thread, and if it was made recently. Double posting is technically illegal in other situations, though it's unlikely that you'll be reprimanded for it.

That was horrible! Why would you want to play a CQ level in doom? Chex Quest is too good for doom! :)

o_O Uh, Slimeinator? I think that way too, but Chex Quest is always first. Doom gets boring sometimes after playing for an hour...while Chex Quest has great mods that make it better, harder, longer, faster. I like that...plus we usually need only one source port...Doom needs Legacy, ZDooM, GZDooM, BOOM, EDGE, and many others...too big.

chex quest was an awsome idea it probly made a lot of people buy chex because you know back then it was like doom3 graphics
Title: Re: wow chex quest EM1 doom style
Post by: Atariangamer on May 08, 2008, 05:18:05 PM
Well, the real reason chex quest was created was to boost sales of chex cereal. Also, the DooM engine was getting a slight bit older (with quake on the way), and the game was based off of the engine. But there was nothing to compare the graphics to, so it was more like a new spin on an old trick...or something.

And it worked too!
Title: Re: wow chex quest EM1 doom style
Post by: Josh on May 12, 2008, 01:10:43 PM
well the reson they used doom is because the quake engine was not open source yet
Title: Re: wow chex quest EM1 doom style
Post by: Manny Cav on May 12, 2008, 05:45:48 PM
I don't think the Doom engine was open source at that time, either.

Nope, it wasn't...it went OpenSource soon after, though. About middle of '96, I think. CQ came just at the end of '95.

(I think...)

As I understand, the Doom source code was released in December 23, 2007, while Chex Quest was developed during 1996, I believe, with a 1997 release date.

Um, earlier than that. Much earlier.

I deserve to be hung for that. :-X I meant to say December 23, 1997.

LOL! I was about to say, "boom, legacy, and others have been around much longer than 2007!"

Well, there's a question. How come we haven't tried to make a Quake mod yet? There are tons of mapping oppertunities, and if you make a flat model, you can still make it look like its a sprite (for enemies, which is the main shut down for 3d ports...no one can make a cartoony looking flemoid MD2)

i allways thoght a chex quest online made with quake 3 arena would be cool
Title: Re: wow chex quest EM1 doom style
Post by: Atariangamer on May 13, 2008, 05:52:44 PM
Now thats taking it a little too far. It would be easy to make some simple models and skins, then have some textures and make maps. But with Quake 3 (and for that point, most shooters past 2001), it would take years to totally redo the game stuff to make it CQ. I've messed a bit with original Quake, and it would be the next logical step (in my view)
Title: Re: wow chex quest EM1 doom style
Post by: Josh on May 14, 2008, 12:42:51 PM
yeah we would have to get 100s of people to help make it
Title: Re: wow chex quest EM1 doom style

Not exactly, Doom 3 didn't take half of 100 people to create.

...Didja see how long it took, tho?
I mean, one person could make a full TC of Quake 3 Arena for Chex Quest. But, how long it takes them is the question. If I had mad modeling skilz, nice drawing skilz, and some other stuff, I could make one. But be prepared to wait.

Heck it could take years to create a Doom TC!

well...most good ones do. But, IF you have a 'knack' for that sort of thing...maybe 3 months. Textures can be public domain'd, or hand drawn in miniutes. Maps (in classic style) can take from an hour to a day. More involved stuff takes weeks to get down right. Sprites can be done in miniutes or public domain'd. Title art and such doesn't take very long. Music can be public domain'd or hand made in a day or two. Depending on the quality. However...If you get riddled with problems, blocked by stuff, losing team members, and other junk...you can get KDiZD (a few years for 10 maps).

Well, would you like to spend years and years reworking the maps down to finite little details? The closest thing we have is TUCQ phase 2. Anything over that would take a very long time.

Thing is, TUCQ has already took a long time, or definitely will by the time it's completed.

well, no better way to learn then to try. Grab GZDooM or Skulltag, a nice model editor, and a good paint program. Then go to the forums or wiki of ZDooM. Muck around a bit. You might get your models featured in TUCQ!

Its even better when you play Chex Quest levels with Doom characteristics (hmmm, haven't done this for about a year, what was it...): I think the enemies were still flemoids but some of the Doom ones that didn't carry over were invisible (facing invisible enemies is quite fun and a good challenge), the map still looked like Chex Quest, it only got REALLY good past the last level and into the original Doom levels.

Ever seen a Flembrane move? MHAHA!

A common effect when playing just the Chex Quest IWAD by itself or a poorly setup TUCQ in Doom Legacy.

You know, as some food for thought, while playing the stolen Chex Quest 3, I frequently encountered invisible "Flemoids". I'd take damage for no reason it seemed, but when I used the "sherrill" cheat, I was shown Flemoids in locations where I couldn't see them outside of Map View mode! Of course, I now know the enemies I encountered as Lost Souls and cacodemons. They put those enemies in without any sprites!

lol

and I have a pack here that when added onto DooM/Doom2 will put a chex quest-y spin on the graphics a bit.
