Title: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Chukker on July 29, 2008, 01:19:55 AM
I was very suprised to find a few things in my big piles of concept illustrations which are clogging up my bookshelf, desk and closet. There were many more but most were left behind at Digital Cafe or given to Ralston. Too bad because they are probably lost to time now. Well at least we have these, they are kinda fun to look back at.

That's pretty cool!

*JAW DROPS* WOW!

Those look awesome! I kinda wondered about yellow flemoids once...but those actually dont look to bad in that drawing...

I'd like to see those zorchers made into some sprites...all of them have a slightly different look...
Wait a second! If we could get that zorch propulsor and phasing zorcher made into a sprite set...We could use them as replacements for the grenade launcher and railgun in Skulltag!

And I actually don't see anything wrong with them...I like those!

I laughed at the food launchers. ;D

The food launchers and the face-on-chex chexters were pretty funny, and did you have any idea of what weapon you were using in the first illustration?

I liked those "M&M"-like versions of Chexter.  Sweet.

And the food launchers were awesome!  I wish we could use those!  :D

IMO, the bottom row of chexters is my favorite (slightly different from the current design)

The food launchers...those would be cool novelty weapons for a game...lol

Too bad strife isn't here...he'd probably like to see this.

I like! I really do crave to see this sort of stuff. You know, behind the sceens stuff for Chex Quest.

The Mini-zorcher, Large Zorcher, and the Rapid Zorcher look similar or very similar to their current counterparts, so I see no value in trying to make new zorchers out of them. It would be too difficult for me to make sprites with such subtle differences, and I imagine that they would look bear little to no difference from the current ones. The other three, though, look somewhat different, and I could see some potential mileage for them in Chex Quest Arena. I've got a few ideas for them. 8)

Thats what I was thinking...But that minizorcher...thats kinda really different...all are being held straight in front of the person, and its got some black cushion? around the edges...IDK

The concept art Rapid Zorcher looks like the "Stolen" CQ3's Rapid Zorcher.

Yes, that's what I thought it resembled too.  :)

Post by: Atariangamer on July 29, 2008, 12:25:47 PM
Reallly? The CQ3 zorcher looks like that one...but that one is more box and less skeleton...

Also, if we had a sprite of that one (it looks completely different IMO), it could be the minigun in CQA.

The concept Rapid Zorcher, in my opinion, looks hardly anything like the Chex Quest 3 version at all. The only difference that I can see is that the bottom base of it is stretched out significantly longer than the released Rapid Zorcher.

The "black cushion" on the Mini-zorcher is likely supposed to be the sides and stuff of the Mini-zorcher.
Do you see what I mean, how the side of it has two black lines and a little triangle attacked to the sides?
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Atariangamer on July 29, 2008, 12:36:47 PM
Yes, it does have 'wings' on the side, but comparing it...they just got rid of the cushion or what ever...
And it still is being held from the center view...not from the side.
The Large is not changed much, just centered.
The Rapid is slightly thinner and longer...and its got those 'horns' on either side.
The Launcher ... I think is the only one that I dont really care for. Its just a funnel with two buttons...maybe add the cartridge on --------------->the side or something...
The Phasing, I like alot. It would be cool to see that again. And its design is like nothing else. Same generic shape, but different
--------------->from the current version...I'd like to see this.
The LAZ is not changed much. A slight few differences in shape (more hard edges), and a slight reconfig of the bottom half.
The boot spoon and spork are held differently...but not much different by design.

I think the current Rapid Zorcher also has some small "horns". Now that I look at the current one, though, it also looks like the lights have been moved. Still, the changes are pretty negligible and, in my opinion, don't warrant a new sprite set.

I also couldn't see any purpose to making new sprite sets just to make them center-view.

Wow, this is great stuff! :O
I like the Launcher Zorcher and The Phasing Zorcher, It would be neat to have some sprites of those.
IMO, theres not much of a diffrence between the orignal and final Zorcher sprites besides The Luncher Zorcher and The Phasing Zorcher to make new sprite sets.

But I do agree with Arch...at least the launcher and phasing.
And braincandy...this IS epic...

Not bad. I wonder how it will size up in the game screen, though. You'll also likely have to do the other frames, as well, unless this is to be a DECORATE weapon that only uses a single frame.

Are you on a public computer or something that blocks images from websites like ImageShack, where those images were hosted?

I hate Imageshack with an overwhelming passion.

Everytime I want to see the full sized image, it gives me 13 popups, and this is WITH the popup blocker on!!!

Uh, what browser are you using?  If you're using IE 6 or 7, don't.  Switch to Firefox 3 instead.

But Atari, that's okay.  I'm just saying that IE sucks, especially IE 6.

If we had any level concepts we could make a whole Concept Chex Quest game with all those turned into sprites and everything. And with yellow flemoids. o_O
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: The Slimeinator on August 10, 2008, 10:03:39 PM
Yellow Flemoids just cannot be, because of the aforementioned Doom pallet limitation. I made a sprite set out of the concept art for the Phasing Zorcher.
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: TrueDude on August 10, 2008, 10:04:51 PM
I'm hoping that someone could make sprites for all of the weapons taken out or drastically changed, including the raygun, food-throwers (with the food itself), and the prototype rocket launcher and phasing zorcher.

EDIT: I guess two have been made, let's go for the others now!
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Manny Cav on August 11, 2008, 10:30:15 AM
I couldn't see a food-thrower being consistent with the current direction Chex Quest has taken. Since Flemoids grow off of nutrition, throwing food could be seen as counterproductive in zorching them back--unless it was "un-nutritional" food or junk food. Hmm. Ideas....
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: TrueDude on August 11, 2008, 12:13:06 PM
Well, instead of zorchmatch, since zorch is known to only work on Flemoids, it could possibly be that you use the food-throwers strictly for zorchmatch? Since milk could make cereal soggy, and some put banana slices and strwaberries on cereal
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Manny Cav on August 11, 2008, 12:16:15 PM
Just for clarification, Zorchmatch refers to Lucius' mod, not the deathmatch game mode. But, still, that wouldn't work very well, either, as the zorchers could easily find themselves in a mode like Invasion that would again put that dilemma back up.
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Atariangamer on August 11, 2008, 05:22:22 PM
I would like to see working versions of the prototype zorchers, so here's my explanation that fits into the science of chex quest.

We all know that Flemoids contain a small amount of natural zorch, and that our zorchers saturate the slime enough to teleport it back. If they evolve/grow too quickly, this zorch will rapidly multiply and create enough zorch to send the flemmie back. Well, the original flemoids grew from small amounts of raw minerals, and had enough time to grow slowly and be complete w/o compromising their zorch ratio. By firing food that has been enhanced with pure minerals and nutrients, it will rapidly grow with each shot, creating an instability in the zorch ratio. when this ratio finally tries to reset itself, it expands TOO much, zorching the flemmie, and saving the limited bit you have. (this explanation can also explain why the flemoids would leave zorch behind...)

Uh... I didn't "know" that Flemoids contain a small amount of natural zorch. When did this start? ???

SOMEWHERE...idk...I heard it before. But I'm just talking in a sense of the unknown.
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Manny Cav on August 11, 2008, 06:45:38 PM
Since Flemoids like nutritional substances, I think flinging big time junk food at them would make more sense.

Their being Teleported by the zorch, and they Grow by nutritional substances. Maybe we could use the food launchers, for another version of ChexQues. We're the Chex Warroir battles The mucky UNhealthy monsters.

-_- so my theory gets slammed...so effin hard...gosh.

Well, I have no idea, now. And if we're gonna make a new CQ...I know exactly what it will be:

Chex Quest: Parallel Dimensions
Every few levels end with a Dimension switch, taking you between the normal one and the alternate one.
In the normal dimension, zorchers and green flemoids. In the parallel one, yellow flemoids and fruit shooters!

Thats a good possiblity, but as I could prolly do no more than dream about it...theres an idea.

But still! Why do the concepts have to make sense? I would use it in a mod if I had em...If your only reason is "It makes no sense story wise"...then why not make a new one?

IDK, I'd make em if I could, but I have no skills in computer art...I sketch, or I pixel art. I dont do really nice things like that. -_-

HALT! Who said I wans't going to make them? I've just been working really hard trying to fix up old sprites I've made.
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Atariangamer on August 11, 2008, 09:36:18 PM
Well, everyone was like "Dont make em shoot fruit, it makes no sense!"

Earlier, I was just trying to make up something that WOULD make it work (which got slammed).

Also, are you gonna make the real things? or are you gonna make the sprites, and turn them to zorch?
Title: Re: Original Chex Quest concept art!
Post by: Replica on August 11, 2008, 09:46:07 PM
I'm not sure what you mean. Personly, I think they look better as sprites, so that is what I'm going to do. If I ever use it in a mod, then I would use Zorch. (Unless its like your story) But once I release it in a mod, It'll have fruit.

I started the zorch in the flemoids theory as an explanation to having larva flemoids in Project F, so please don't slam atarian.

Hey...that also could account for the fact that when a flemoid shoots a flemoid, they go back...eh.

Okay. Well, with that cleared up...everyone back to normal...I hope...

This is amazing stuff. I'm really glad I get to see this stuff, you have no idea how cool it was playing cq as a little kid. I used to draw pictures like you were in the game but that's just really cool. Thank you.
