Title: Mario Zorchmatch isn't an original map..[it stays, I have permission to use it]
Post by: 75 on October 29, 2010, 11:57:41 PM
This map is staying, CutmanMike said I have permission to use it

I just saw this today...

I'm going to have to take that map out... not only is the chex skulltag pack version a rip off, it's an inferior rip off. Darn! I put work into that map too...

Dang, it IS inferior...maybe you should talk to Lucius about it, I can't imagine he would just rip off a map for Zorchmatch.

I'm certain it's a rip off, unfortunately, because the size of some walls is perfectly sized for the blue mario blocks, but the textures were originally replaced with (wrongly sized) chex textures. I fixed that for my version.

Also, note the location of the warp pipes at the start of the video. That's exactly where the totem poles are in his version, and they're the exact same  height. I couldn't figure out what the point of the marble thing sticking out of the ground was at around :40, but it makes perfect sense in this map. Again, he just swapped the textures...

All he did was get rid of the castle interior, and swap some textures...  :(

I tried to find MarioST.wad, for a screenshot comparison, but I was unsuccessful.

If I remember correctly, this was already known at the time. I'm pretty sure it was meant to be a reference to that mod, and that is it.

hmm... I found this http://invisionfree.com/forums/chexquestforums/ar/t1300.htm

it says cutmanmike worked on zorchmatch. I'll have to ask him about that

Quote from: CutmanmikeI have never touched chexquest in my life

that's strange...

EDIT - and now it makes sense

Quote from: LuciusThe first map in Chex Quest Zorchmatch Edition is a modified version of the Mario Skulltag map by a mapper known as Cutmanmike

ahh. so does it not have to be taken out?

No, I still want to take it out. It's too much of a rip. Maybe, if we modified it to make it less like that map...

But, at this point it would probably be better to just make a new mario map.

The whole Mario-ness of the map for me takes away from the Chex-Quest-ness of the game.
Maybe just ChexQuestize it a bit more. The layout of the map reminds me of the Provincial Park. So if we want to, we could build the map with that (or another) theme that pays homage to that map and has similar gameplay but with a Chex Quest spin both artistically and in gameplay.

imo it would help the map flow better with the overall style of the game.
Every single time I'm loaded to that map I'm like "whoa what's this place?! It's so funky!"

But I love that map! It brings me back to the good ol' days. Can you just modify it a bit?

why don't you join the servers...

I really like it too, but it's not made for this wad.

It'd be one thing if it was a tribute (like what I'm going to do for cybercrime) but this version is actually really inferior to the original, partially because of the chex things lucius added in. The best thing I could think of to do with it would be to make it more like Cutman's map, or remake it completely, in the same style as lucius's rip off, without it actually being a rip off.

I like the cartoony style of the map, though it's a gorgeous map.

I could remake it into something like provincial park, like Datra was thinking. I kind of like that idea

Why did I stop hosting servers? I don't have the time, much. Maybe someday.

actually, I'm hosting my own... seems like the board has more TF2 players than chex players, which strikes me as kind of bizarre.

If I ever find the time, I'll pick my editor back up and try to keep the layout (IMHO, the layout of the level is amazing for gameplay), but change it to more chex-ish-ness.

I also need to reget Skulltag, as usually every time I go to play TF2, nobody else comes ><;

I talked to CutmanMike, he's fine with me using the map, so it stays. I might modify it for the next version, to make the layout a little more interesting.
